Description

"They say there's an autobiography in everyone, waiting to be written; but few have the skill to put pen to paper - literally, in this case - to produce such a moving and compelling story. Jan's remarkable memory for detail and incident, recounted in this gentle and affectionate narrative, brings to life warm recollections of her family, friends, loves, neighbours, students, and colleagues, and - spoiler alert - reports surprising meetings with two household names. She paints a vivid picture of life and times growing up in Britain in the middle decades of the 20th century, of her later travels through several counties of England and Wales, and of her often eventful global encounters and travels. All this, infused with insightful reflections on writing and teaching, makes for a fascinating read. "

Testimonials & Comments about 'Shooting of the Cuckoo'

The Shooting of the Cuckoo is a remarkable autobiography. It is not an exhaustive list of world changing achievements but a primer for a life well lived. A life we can aspire to and use for our own parenting. It highlighted the great benefits of being clear about life values such as community, integrity and the power of education. That education, too, has lifelong impact if it is guided by teachers who are passionate about their profession. This book will have a message for every reader.

My late husband, Joseph Berrisford, worked on the railways in the 1950s (before he met me in 1957). He was a fireman on the Perth link and told me he worked with your father George Madden who was the train driver. He said what a wonderful man he was, very clever and intelligent and how much he enjoyed working with him. He made a really big impression on Joe and also with lots of others who worked with him. Sadly Joe died in 2008 so I can't ask him about other memories of your father but he told me that he was influenced by your father's integrity and character and felt how fortunate he was to have known him.

I have really enjoyed reading your books Janice - they are wonderful. Annie has kindly let me read them. I think you are an amazing person to have done all that you have done before coming to Fowey and since leaving. You are definitely your father's daughter! Your voice comes through very clearly in all of your writings and I am very grateful to know you.

In 1984, when we were both working at Fowey School and my mother died, you were understanding and comforting to me. I have never forgotten your kindness.

You have spread so much love and empathy to the people whose lives you have touched. With every good wish and lots of love.

Am enjoying the book. I can relate to some of your adventures. Your dad bought you and your sister a Raleigh bike. I have a 22 speed Raleigh bike.I have just finished reading about your first love and also the bit about the petals, 'I love you, I love you not.' My god Jan, I remember doing that!

The reader has followed my writing for a number of years and she has felt the need to write dear Eva's name in the sand. It is so touching as the tide comes in and the tide goes out which is psychologically correct. We reach out to Eva and feel that we are close and then she is drawn away again. Several readers have asked me about this.

There is no closure for Eva until the documentary is finished. The story of Eva will be completed when our long search comes to an end. We are growing closer and closure as her life beyond death unravels. Once we discover where her skull is, much will be resolved. Then the writing in the sand will cease.
